Hexagram 56: The Wanderer

䷷ 旅 Lǚ – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

The Wanderer intimates that in the condition which it denotes there may be some little attainment and progress. If the stranger or traveler is firm and correct as he ought to be, there will be good fortune.

The Image

Fire upon a mountain: the image of the Wanderer. Thus the superior man exerts his wisdom and caution in the use of punishments, and does not allow litigations to continue.

Description

The Wanderer (Lu) shows fire on the mountain: it moves on quickly and never lingers. The traveler is a stranger everywhere, with few rights and little support. Success comes in small ways through modesty, caution and correct behavior; quarrels and lawsuits should be settled quickly, not dragged out.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yin (bottom)

The wanderer moves. Favorable — the journey teaches; embrace the unknown.

  2. Line 2: Old Yin

Wandering with purpose. Favorable — each step reveals the self; walk with intention.

  3. Line 3: Old Yang

Wandering with confusion. Danger — aimless travel exhausts the soul; find your compass.

Wandering with humility. Favorable — the guest becomes wise; listen and learn.

  5. Line 5: Old Yin

Wandering with pride. Danger — arrogance isolates the traveler; open your heart.

  6. Line 6: Old Yang (top)

Wandering fulfilled. Favorable — the road ends; the soul returns home.

❤️ What does hexagram 56 mean for relationships and private life?

Far from familiar ground, in a new city, a new family or simply adrift emotionally, you meet people as a guest. Connections are light and temporary for the moment. Be friendly and respectful, but don't invest everything in relationships that have no roots yet. Long-distance love and travel romances need clear agreements. Settle disagreements quickly rather than carrying them from place to place.

💼 What does hexagram 56 mean for work and money?

Transitional times: freelance work, a temporary contract, an assignment abroad, a new employer. Your position is provisional, so be modest, adaptable and impeccably reliable. Small successes are possible; big ambitions are premature. Don't get entangled in local politics or prolonged disputes. Keep your papers in order and your reputation clean, and move on when it is time.

🌌 What does hexagram 56 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Everyone is a guest on this earth. Hold everything lightly: possessions, positions, even opinions. The traveler who stays humble and alert is welcomed; the arrogant one is shown the door. Let the transience of things teach detachment, not anxiety. Pilgrimage, solitary walks or simply time spent in unfamiliar places can sharpen awareness. Wherever you go, carry your center with you.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 28, Preponderance of the Great. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 28 – Preponderance of the Great

Preponderance of the Great suggests to us a beam that is weak. There will be advantage in moving in any direction whatever; there will be success.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Li – Fire
The Clinging (Middle Daughter). Within, it is clarity, inner vision and passion; without, a light that guides and connects through beauty and meaning.
Lower, inner: Gen – Mountain
Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
