Hexagram 60: Limitation

䷻ 節 Jié – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Limitation intimates that under its conditions there will be progress and attainment. But if the regulations which it prescribes are severe and difficult, they cannot be permanent.

The Image

Water above a lake: the image of Limitation. Thus the superior man constructs his methods of numbering and measurement, and discusses points of virtue and conduct.

Description

Limitation (Jie) shows water held within a lake: the lake can hold only so much, and its limits give it shape. Sensible boundaries, budgets and rules create freedom rather than restricting it. But limits that are too harsh cannot last; the figure asks for measure even in measuring.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

  2. Line 2: Old Yang

Limitation with wisdom. Favorable — knowing your limits brings freedom; structure is strength.

  3. Line 3: Old Yin

Limitation with rigidity. Danger — walls become prisons; stay flexible.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

Limitation with fear. Danger — restriction without purpose stifles growth; breathe.

Limitation fulfilled. Favorable — the vessel holds; the essence remains.

Reading by area of life

❤️ What does hexagram 60 mean for relationships and private life?

Healthy boundaries strengthen relationships. Clarify what you can give and what you can't: how much time, attention and money you can offer. Respect the limits of others as well. Rules that are too strict will cause rebellion, so keep them humane and flexible. Clear expectations prevent resentment and let affection flow freely within a shared structure.

💼 What does hexagram 60 mean for work and money?

Set limits: budgets, deadlines, scope, working hours. Measured discipline makes resources last and teams effective. Overly rigid control, however, breeds frustration and evasion. Find the right measure and discuss it openly; limits that people understand are limits people keep. Clear rules about quality and conduct help everyone. Financial prudence pays off, so spend within your means and save regularly.

🌌 What does hexagram 60 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Freedom needs form. A practice with clear times, simple rules and honest limits supports growth far better than vague intentions. But don't torment yourself with impossible austerities; they won't last. Find a measure you can keep. Reflect regularly on your values and conduct. A river without banks becomes a swamp, and a life without limits loses its shape.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 27, Nourishment. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 27 – Nourishment

Nourishment indicates that with firm correctness there will be good fortune. We must look at what we are seeking to nourish, and by the exercise of our thoughts seek for the proper aliment.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Kan – Water
The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
Lower, inner: Dui – Lake
The Joyous (Youngest Daughter). Within, it shows as joy, self-reflection and openness; without, as inspiration that finds expression through conversation and creativity.
