Hexagram 28: Preponderance of the Great

䷛ 大過 Dà Guò – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Preponderance of the Great suggests to us a beam that is weak. There will be advantage in moving in any direction whatever; there will be success.

The Image

Trees hidden beneath the waters of a marsh: the image of Preponderance of the Great. Thus the superior man stands up alone and has no fear, and keeps retired from the world without regret.

Description

Preponderance of the Great (Da Guo) shows a ridgepole that sags because the middle is too heavy and the ends too weak. The situation is exceptional and under strain. Something must change, and soon; it takes courage, independence and a gentle but decisive hand to move through it.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yin (bottom)

The beam bends. Danger — too much weight strains the structure; lighten your load.

  2. Line 2: Old Yang

Exceeding with courage. Favorable — boldness breaks limits; act with heart.

  3. Line 3: Old Yang

Exceeding with recklessness. Danger — force without wisdom leads to collapse; pause and reflect.

  4. Line 4: Old Yang

Exceeding with vision. Favorable — transcendence requires risk; rise above.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

Exceeding with humility. Favorable — greatness tempered by grace endures.

  6. Line 6: Old Yin (top)

Exceeding ends. Favorable — the storm passes; rebuild with care.

Reading by area of life

❤️ What does hexagram 28 mean for relationships and private life?

Too much weight is resting on one point. Perhaps one partner carries everything, perhaps a single issue dominates every conversation. The structure is groaning, so don't wait for it to break. Redistribute responsibilities, speak honestly about the overload, and be prepared to make unusual decisions. Standing by your own convictions, even if you stand alone, may be necessary now.

💼 What does hexagram 28 mean for work and money?

Overload: too many projects, too much debt, too few hands. Exceptional pressure calls for exceptional measures. Act before the beam breaks: renegotiate, restructure, delegate, or step away from what cannot be held. Your decision may be unpopular, so make it calmly, explain it plainly and stand by it. Courage now prevents a much bigger collapse later on.

🌌 What does hexagram 28 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Extraordinary times ask for an extraordinary inner stance. You may need to stand alone, unafraid of opinion, or withdraw from the world without regret. Neither is easy. Let go of what overloads you, including expectations that were never yours. The middle of your life can only bear so much; lighten it, and strength returns to the ends.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 1, The Creative. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 1 – The Creative

The Creative is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Dui – Lake
The Joyous (Youngest Daughter). Within, it shows as joy, self-reflection and openness; without, as inspiration that finds expression through conversation and creativity.
Lower, inner: Xun – Wind
The Gentle (Eldest Daughter). Within, it works as quiet penetration that loosens inner blockages; without, as a connecting force that brings people and events together in the current of fate.
