Hexagram 54: The Marrying Maiden

䷵ 歸妹 Guī Mèi – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

The Marrying Maiden indicates that, under the conditions which it denotes, action will be evil and in no way advantageous.

The Image

Thunder over the waters of a marsh: the image of the Marrying Maiden. Thus the superior man, having regard to the far-distant end, knows the mischief that may be done at the beginning.

Description

The Marrying Maiden (Gui Mei) shows a young woman entering a household as a secondary wife: a position without full rights, where relationships are shaped by impulse and circumstance rather than by choice. Taking the initiative here leads to misfortune. Think of the long-term consequences, and know the limits of your position.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

The maiden enters. Danger — new roles bring tension; know your place.

  2. Line 2: Old Yang

Marriage with clarity. Favorable — union built on truth endures; speak honestly.

  3. Line 3: Old Yin

Marriage with confusion. Danger — unclear intentions fracture the bond; seek alignment.

  4. Line 4: Old Yang

Marriage with humility. Favorable — surrender deepens connection; serve love.

  5. Line 5: Old Yin

Marriage with pride. Danger — ego distorts union; soften the heart.

  6. Line 6: Old Yin (top)

Marriage fulfilled. Favorable — the bond holds; the dance begins.

❤️ What does hexagram 54 mean for relationships and private life?

Look honestly at your position. Are you equal partners, or is one person's role uncertain, secondary, dependent? Relationships begun on impulse or out of need often carry imbalances that show up later. Don't force things or demand what the situation can't give. Act with tact and dignity, and think about where this connection leads in the long run.

💼 What does hexagram 54 mean for work and money?

Your position is weaker than it looks: a junior role, an unclear contract, a dependent partnership. Pushing for more right now is likely to backfire. Know the rules of the game and your real influence. Avoid arrangements whose long-term consequences you haven't examined. Think through the endgame before signing, secure your rights in writing, and keep your conduct correct.

🌌 What does hexagram 54 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Impulse is not the same as calling. Notice where you have entered situations driven by attraction, fear or need rather than by clear choice. Without judging yourself, consider where they lead. Wisdom means seeing the end in the beginning. Accept your current limits gracefully and serve faithfully where you are, while keeping your inner freedom. Every station has its dignity.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 63, After Completion. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 63 – After Completion

After Completion intimates progress and success in small matters. There will be advantage in being firm and correct. There has been good fortune in the beginning; there may be disorder in the end.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Zhen – Thunder
The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
Lower, inner: Dui – Lake
The Joyous (Youngest Daughter). Within, it shows as joy, self-reflection and openness; without, as inspiration that finds expression through conversation and creativity.
