Hexagram 53: Development (Gradual Progress)
䷴ 漸 Jiàn – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Development suggests to us the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune attending it. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.
The Image
A tree upon a mountain: the image of Development. Thus the superior man attains to and maintains his extraordinary virtue, and makes the manners of the people good.
Description
Development (Jian) shows a tree growing slowly on a mountain: gradual progress that follows a natural order. Like a traditional marriage arranged step by step, lasting things develop through proper stages. The figure asks for patience, correct procedure and steady influence over time.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

Reading by area of life
❤️ What does hexagram 53 mean for relationships and private life?
Love develops step by step, and that is a good thing. Don't skip stages. Get to know each other, meet families, let trust build before taking big steps. Traditional sequences exist for a reason: they give a relationship time to root. Patience now leads to a stable partnership in which both people grow at their own pace.
💼 What does hexagram 53 mean for work and money?
Gradual progress is the right path. Build your career or business step by step, following proper channels and procedures. Shortcuts may look tempting but undermine credibility. Each stage, mastered thoroughly, prepares the next. Your steady example influences colleagues and the company culture over time. Think in years, not weeks; growth of this kind is far harder to reverse.
🌌 What does hexagram 53 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Growth of the soul has its own tempo, like a tree on a mountain that grows slowly but stands for centuries. Don't force breakthroughs. Practice consistently, let insights mature, and let your character influence others quietly through example. Each stage of the path has its lessons; honor them before moving on. Trust the slowness, because patience is itself the teaching here.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 64, Before Completion. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 64 – Before Completion
Before Completion intimates progress and success in the circumstances which it implies. We see a young fox that has nearly crossed the stream, when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Xun – Wind
- The Gentle (Eldest Daughter). Within, it works as quiet penetration that loosens inner blockages; without, as a connecting force that brings people and events together in the current of fate.
- Lower, inner: Gen – Mountain
- Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
