Hexagram 63: After Completion

䷾ 既濟 Jì Jì – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

After Completion intimates progress and success in small matters. There will be advantage in being firm and correct. There has been good fortune in the beginning; there may be disorder in the end.

The Image

Water above fire: the image of After Completion. Thus the superior man thinks of evil that may come, and beforehand guards against it.

Description

After Completion (Ji Ji) shows water above fire: every line in its proper place, a state of perfect order. Yet this is exactly when vigilance matters most, because things that are complete begin to decline. Success at the start can end in disorder, so anticipate trouble and guard against it.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

Completion arrives. Favorable — the work is done; rest and reflect.

  2. Line 2: Old Yin

Completion with awareness. Favorable — endings hold beginnings; stay present.

  3. Line 3: Old Yang

Completion with pride. Danger — attachment to success breeds downfall; stay humble.

  4. Line 4: Old Yin

Completion with clarity. Favorable — the cycle closes cleanly; honor the journey.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

Completion with haste. Danger — rushing past the finish line blinds the lesson; pause.

  6. Line 6: Old Yin (top)

Completion fulfilled. Favorable — the circle holds; the soul breathes.

❤️ What does hexagram 63 mean for relationships and private life?

A goal has been reached: the wedding, the move, the reconciliation. Everything seems settled, but don't relax into complacency. Relationships need ongoing care precisely when they feel secure. Watch for small signs of neglect and address them early. Keep courting each other; small rituals of appreciation keep the fire alive. Order maintained with attention lasts; order taken for granted quietly falls apart.

💼 What does hexagram 63 mean for work and money?

The project is done, the target met, the system running. Now the risk is decline through carelessness. Maintain, monitor and refine; don't celebrate so loudly that you forget the details. Write down what made it work while you still remember. Plan for risks before they appear. Companies falter when they assume success is permanent, while small improvements keep the balance stable.

🌌 What does hexagram 63 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Arriving is not the end. After a breakthrough or a milestone, keep practicing as if you were a beginner. Pride in achievement slips in easily, and with it, carelessness. Anticipate where you might falter and prepare gently. Balance is never static; it must be renewed moment by moment. Gratitude keeps attainment from turning stale, and vigilance, held lightly, protects what has been gained.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 64, Before Completion. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 64 – Before Completion

Before Completion intimates progress and success in the circumstances which it implies. We see a young fox that has nearly crossed the stream, when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Kan – Water
The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
Lower, inner: Li – Fire
The Clinging (Middle Daughter). Within, it is clarity, inner vision and passion; without, a light that guides and connects through beauty and meaning.
