Hexagram 52: Keeping Still (Mountain)

䷳ 艮 Gèn – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

When one's resting is like that of the back, and he loses all consciousness of self; when he walks in his courtyard and does not see any of the persons in it, there will be no error.

The Image

Two mountains, one over the other: the image of Keeping Still. Thus the superior man does not go in his thoughts beyond the duties of the position in which he is.

Description

Keeping Still (Gen) doubles the mountain: stillness upon stillness. Rest at the right time is as important as movement at the right time. The figure speaks of quieting the back, where the nerves of the body run, so that the ego falls silent and you act from calm rather than impulse.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yin (bottom)

The mountain is still. Favorable — silence holds power; rest in the pause.

  2. Line 2: Old Yin

Stillness with clarity. Favorable — awareness deepens in quiet; observe without judgment.

  3. Line 3: Old Yang

Stillness with tension. Danger — forced calm breeds unrest; soften your grip.

  4. Line 4: Old Yin

Stillness with insight. Favorable — the inner world opens; listen within.

  5. Line 5: Old Yin

Stillness with fear. Danger — silence mistaken for emptiness isolates; reconnect.

  6. Line 6: Old Yang (top)

Stillness fulfilled. Favorable — peace returns; the soul breathes.

❤️ What does hexagram 52 mean for relationships and private life?

Calm is what's needed now. Instead of reacting, analyzing or pushing, let things rest. Quiet companionship can say more than a long conversation. If you are anxious about where a relationship is heading, bring your attention back to the present: the person in front of you, today. Stop rehearsing arguments in your head. Stillness lets turbulent feelings settle on their own.

💼 What does hexagram 52 mean for work and money?

Pause before acting. Restless activity won't help; clarity will. Stick to your own responsibilities and stop worrying about matters outside your role. Meetings without purpose, frantic multitasking and constant checking drain energy, so silence your notifications for a while. Focused, quiet work done one task at a time is productive now. Decisions made from a calm mind are better than decisions made under pressure.

🌌 What does hexagram 52 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Meditation is the heart of this figure. Sit still, let the body settle, let thoughts come and go. Stillness of the back, the old texts say, quiets the self. Practice it in daily life as well: one thing at a time, one place at a time. When the mind stops reaching beyond the present, a deep peace becomes available.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 40, Deliverance. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 40 – Deliverance

In Deliverance advantage will be found in the southwest. If no further operations are called for, there will be good fortune in coming back to the old conditions. If some operations are called for, there will be good fortune in the early conducting of them.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Gen – Mountain
Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
Lower, inner: Gen – Mountain
Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
