Hexagram 64: Before Completion
䷿ 未濟 Wèi Jì – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Before Completion intimates progress and success in the circumstances which it implies. We see a young fox that has nearly crossed the stream, when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.
The Image
Fire above water: the image of Before Completion. Thus the superior man carefully discriminates among the qualities of things and the different positions they occupy.
Description
Before Completion (Wei Ji) shows fire above water: nothing is in its proper place yet, but everything is moving toward order. The young fox almost across the river gets its tail wet. Success is possible, but only with great care and a clear sense of what belongs where.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →
-
Line 1: Old Yin (bottom)
The threshold appears. Favorable — the end is near, but not yet; stay focused.
-
Line 2: Old Yang
Before completion with patience. Favorable — the final step matters most; move mindfully.
-
Line 3: Old Yin
Before completion with doubt. Danger — hesitation delays the crossing; trust yourself.
-
Line 4: Old Yang
Before completion with clarity. Favorable — the vision is clear; act with precision.
-
Line 5: Old Yin
Before completion with arrogance. Danger — pride stumbles at the edge; bow to the moment.
-
Line 6: Old Yang (top)
Before completion fulfilled. Favorable — the leap is made; the cycle begins anew.

❤️ What does hexagram 64 mean for relationships and private life?
The relationship is in transition, not yet where it could be. Hope is justified, but don't declare victory too early. Careful steps matter most at the end, when it's tempting to relax. Understand each person's needs and place in the bigger picture. Unfinished doesn't mean failing; it means still alive. Patience and discernment will carry you over the last stretch of the river.
💼 What does hexagram 64 mean for work and money?
Almost there, but not quite. The final phase of a project is the riskiest: rushing now could undo everything. Check details, assign tasks carefully, put the right people in the right roles. Distinguish what is truly ready from what only looks ready. The transition from chaos to order is underway; complete it consciously, and cross the finish line deliberately.
🌌 What does hexagram 64 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
The path is never finished. That is not a failure but a promise: there is always another step, another crossing. Approach it with the caution of an experienced fox on thin ice. Sort out what belongs where in your life. The I Ching ends on this open door as a reminder that transformation continues, and every completion becomes a new beginning.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 63, After Completion. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 63 – After Completion
After Completion intimates progress and success in small matters. There will be advantage in being firm and correct. There has been good fortune in the beginning; there may be disorder in the end.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Li – Fire
- The Clinging (Middle Daughter). Within, it is clarity, inner vision and passion; without, a light that guides and connects through beauty and meaning.
- Lower, inner: Kan – Water
- The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
