Hexagram 51: The Arousing (Shock, Thunder)

䷲ 震 Zhèn – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

The Arousing gives the intimation of ease and development. When the time of movement comes, its subject will be found looking out with apprehension, and yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement terrifies all within a hundred li, he will be like the sincere worshipper who is not startled into letting go his ladle and cup of sacrificial spirits.

The Image

Thunder repeated: the image of the Arousing. Thus the superior man is fearful and apprehensive, cultivates his virtue, and examines his faults.

Description

The Arousing (Zhen) doubles thunder: shock upon shock, a sudden jolt that frightens everyone for miles around. Fear is natural, but it need not overwhelm. Whoever keeps inner composure, laughs afterward and examines their life in the wake of the shock emerges stronger.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 51 mean for relationships and private life?

A sudden event shakes your private life: a revelation, an outburst, unexpected news. Your first reaction may be fear or anger. Take a breath before you respond. Shocks often clear the air and reveal what has been hidden. Once the noise fades, talk calmly about what happened. A relationship that survives the thunder can laugh about it later.

💼 What does hexagram 51 mean for work and money?

Disruption arrives: a market shock, a reorganization, an unexpected decision from above. Don't panic. Keep doing your essential tasks while others lose their heads. Afterward, examine what the shock revealed about weak points in your plans. Crisis management, calm communication and quick adaptation set you apart. Steadiness under pressure is remembered long after the event, and shaken structures can be rebuilt better.

🌌 What does hexagram 51 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Thunder wakes the sleeper. A shock, painful or merely startling, interrupts routine and demands attention. Let it lead to self-examination rather than lasting fear. What did you neglect? What matters now? Hold on to your center like the worshipper who does not spill the sacrificial cup. Composure is learned one tremor at a time, and awe that grows from fright deepens practice.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 39, Obstruction. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 39 – Obstruction

In Obstruction advantage will be found in the southwest, and the contrary in the northeast. It will be advantageous also to meet with the great man. In these circumstances, with firmness and correctness, there will be good fortune.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Zhen – Thunder
The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
Lower, inner: Zhen – Thunder
The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
