Hexagram 39: Obstruction
䷦ 蹇 Jiǎn – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
In Obstruction advantage will be found in the southwest, and the contrary in the northeast. It will be advantageous also to meet with the great man. In these circumstances, with firmness and correctness, there will be good fortune.
The Image
Water upon a mountain: the image of Obstruction. Thus the superior man turns round and examines himself, and cultivates his virtue.
Description
Obstruction (Jian) shows water on top of a mountain: a steep ascent with danger ahead. The way forward is blocked. The figure advises turning back to gather strength, seeking allies and wise counsel, and above all examining yourself, because the obstacle is also an invitation to inner growth.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

Reading by area of life
❤️ What does hexagram 39 mean for relationships and private life?
A relationship has hit a wall, and pushing harder will not move it. Pause and ask what part you play in the impasse: habits, expectations, unspoken fears. Talk to a friend or counselor who sees more clearly than you do right now. Sometimes the best move is a step back, toward warmth and support, before trying again.
💼 What does hexagram 39 mean for work and money?
Approvals are denied, deals get stuck, resources go missing. Don't storm the mountain. Retreat to safer ground, regroup, and look for experienced allies who can open doors. Use the delay to fix weaknesses in your own plan. Difficulties of this kind often reveal flaws that would have caused bigger problems later. Patience here is strategy, not surrender.
🌌 What does hexagram 39 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Every blockage turns the gaze inward. Instead of blaming circumstances, examine yourself: where does resistance come from, and what is it trying to teach? Cultivate character while the path is closed. Seek out a teacher or community, since few obstacles are cleared alone. A wall is also a mirror. When you change from within, the way ahead often opens without a struggle.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 64, Before Completion. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 64 – Before Completion
Before Completion intimates progress and success in the circumstances which it implies. We see a young fox that has nearly crossed the stream, when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Kan – Water
- The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
- Lower, inner: Gen – Mountain
- Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
