Hexagram 4: Youthful Folly

䷃ 蒙 Méng – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Youthful Folly indicates progress and success. I do not go and seek the youthful and inexperienced; he comes and seeks me. When he shows the sincerity that marks the first recourse to divination, I instruct him. If he applies a second and a third time, that is troublesome, and I do not instruct the troublesome. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.

The Image

A spring issuing forth beneath a mountain: the image of Youthful Folly. Thus the superior man strives to be resolute in his conduct and nourishes his virtue.

Description

Youthful Folly (Meng) describes inexperience: real potential that has not yet been shaped. Ignorance is not condemned here, but it has to be met with sincere questions and willing study. The figure also speaks to teachers, and to anyone who consults an oracle: ask once, earnestly, and listen.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yin (bottom)

Help the child. Favorable for guidance — ignorance is not a flaw, but an opportunity; lead gently, not forcefully.

  2. Line 2: Old Yang

Patience with ignorance. Favorable — accepting not-knowing opens the way to learning; humility is the root of wisdom.

  3. Line 3: Old Yin

Do not punish too harshly — rigidity in teaching stifles growth; softness and structure are the keys.

  4. Line 4: Old Yin

Persistence in ignorance. Danger — refusal to learn leads to stagnation; stay open to the new.

  5. Line 5: Old Yin

Education bears fruit — mentorship unlocks potential; knowledge becomes alive.

  6. Line 6: Old Yang (top)

Punishment for stubbornness — when lessons are ignored, crisis follows; don’t miss the moment for transformation.

Reading by area of life

❤️ What does hexagram 4 mean for relationships and private life?

Inexperience shows up in love as guessing, testing and repeating old mistakes. Someone here, possibly you, is still learning how closeness works. Be patient with clumsiness but clear about limits. Ask direct questions instead of reading signs, and actually listen to the answers. Mistakes become useful once they are admitted. Maturity in a relationship grows from honesty, not from pretending to know already.

💼 What does hexagram 4 mean for work and money?

Be a student. New tasks, tools or roles call for humility and a willingness to be taught by people who know more. Ask good questions once and apply the answers before asking again. If you are the one teaching, set conditions: help those who genuinely want to learn and do not chase the reluctant. Solid knowledge built now will outlast any quick shortcut.

🌌 What does hexagram 4 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Every path starts with not knowing. The spring at the foot of the mountain does not yet know where it flows, yet it keeps moving. Accept guidance, question your own certainties, and practice regularly instead of waiting for insight. When consulting the I Ching, ask once and sincerely; asking again and again for a better answer shows you are not ready to hear the first.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 24, Return. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 24 – Return

Return indicates that there will be free course and progress. The subject of it finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed. He will return and repeat his proper course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Gen – Mountain
Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
Lower, inner: Kan – Water
The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
