Hexagram 5: Waiting
䷄ 需 Xū – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Waiting intimates that, with the sincerity declared in it, there will be brilliant success. With firmness there will be good fortune, and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream.
The Image
Clouds ascending over the sky: the image of Waiting. Thus the superior man eats and drinks, feasts and enjoys himself.
Description
Waiting (Xu) is about timing: rain clouds have gathered, but the rain has not yet fallen. The situation is not ripe, and forcing it would be a mistake. What the figure asks for is confident patience, keeping strength and sincerity intact until the right moment comes.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 5 mean for relationships and private life?
Something you hope for is not ready yet: an answer, a commitment, a reconciliation. Pressure will only delay it. Use the time well: enjoy shared meals, keep things light, look after yourself. Waiting with trust is very different from waiting with anxiety, and the other person can feel the difference. When the moment arrives, you will recognize it and be ready to act.
💼 What does hexagram 5 mean for work and money?
Hold your position. A deal, promotion or decision depends on factors you cannot speed up. Prepare thoroughly, keep your skills sharp and your finances steady, but do not force a premature outcome. Rest is part of the strategy, not a loss of time. When conditions change, move decisively; a long pause followed by clear action is exactly what succeeds here.
🌌 What does hexagram 5 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Patience is a practice of the whole body. Eating, drinking and enjoying yourself while the rain gathers sounds simple, yet it requires real inner calm. Notice where impatience pulls at you and ask what it is afraid of. Faith here is not passivity; it is staying sincere and nourished until the time is right. Ripeness cannot be hurried, only recognized.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 38, Opposition. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 38 – Opposition
Opposition indicates that, notwithstanding the condition of things which it denotes, in small matters there will still be good success.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Kan – Water
- The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
- Lower, inner: Qian – Heaven
- The Creative (Father). Within, it shows itself as will, resolve and the drive to act; without, as an ordering force that gives direction and structure.
