Hexagram 24: Return

䷗ 復 Fù – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Return indicates that there will be free course and progress. The subject of it finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed. He will return and repeat his proper course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.

The Image

Thunder in the midst of the earth: the image of Return. Thus the ancient kings, on the day of the winter solstice, shut the gates of the passes, so that traveling merchants could not pursue their journeys, nor the princes go on with the inspection of their states.

Description

Return (Fu) marks the turning point: after the darkest time, the first strong line comes back at the bottom. Light returns naturally, without force. The figure asks you to honor the new beginning gently, give it rest and protection, and let it grow at its own pace.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

Return begins. Favorable — the cycle turns; what was lost comes back.

  2. Line 2: Old Yin

Return with joy. Favorable — reunion brings healing; welcome the familiar.

  3. Line 3: Old Yin

Return with regret. Danger — clinging to the past distorts the present; forgive and move.

  4. Line 4: Old Yin

Return with clarity. Favorable — lessons learned guide the way; wisdom returns.

  5. Line 5: Old Yin

Return with humility. Favorable — the prodigal finds peace; bow to the journey.

  6. Line 6: Old Yin (top)

Return complete. Favorable — the spiral closes; begin again.

❤️ What does hexagram 24 mean for relationships and private life?

Warmth returns after a cold spell. An old friend reaches out, a partner softens, a broken connection shows signs of life. Welcome it without pushing. New beginnings are fragile; give them quiet, regular attention rather than grand gestures. If you have strayed from what matters, this is the moment to come back. Small steps in the right direction count.

💼 What does hexagram 24 mean for work and money?

After a difficult period, things begin to move again. Customers return, ideas flow, energy builds. Don't rush into full expansion. Rest, review, and let the recovery establish itself before you push hard. Returning to the core business or to a proven method may be wiser than chasing something new. The upswing is real, and it is still early.

🌌 What does hexagram 24 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

The winter solstice of the soul: the deepest dark is behind you, and light starts to return. Mark it quietly. Go back to the practice you abandoned, or to the simplest form of it. Rest is part of renewal. The good in you has not disappeared; it is coming back by itself, and gentle attention is all it needs.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 2, The Receptive. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 2 – The Receptive

The Receptive is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and having the firmness of a mare. When the superior man has to make any movement, if he takes the initiative he will go astray; if he follows, he will find his proper lord. The advantage will be seen in his getting friends in the southwest and losing friends in the northeast. If he rests in correctness and firmness, there will be good fortune.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Kun – Earth
The Receptive (Mother). Within, it appears as devotion, patience and support; without, as a nourishing space where forms and ideas take shape.
Lower, inner: Zhen – Thunder
The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
