Hexagram 3: Difficulty at the Beginning

䷂ 屯 Zhūn – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Difficulty at the Beginning indicates great progress and success, and the advantage will come from being correct and firm. But any movement in advance should not be lightly undertaken. There will be advantage in appointing feudal princes.

The Image

Clouds and thunder: the image of Difficulty at the Beginning. Thus the superior man adjusts his measures as in sorting the threads of the warp and woof.

Description

Difficulty at the Beginning (Zhun) shows a new thing breaking through the ground: alive and full of promise, but still disordered and exposed. Confusion is normal at this stage. The figure counsels patience, careful organization and finding the right helpers before pushing forward.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

Birth is difficult. Favorable to remain firm — beginnings are chaotic; hold steady even when the path is unclear.

  2. Line 2: Old Yin

Obstacles arise. Favorable to seek help — resistance calls for support; this is not a time to act alone.

  3. Line 3: Old Yin

An ox is harnessed to a cart. Delay — movement without preparation leads to stagnation; reassess your resources and strategy.

  4. Line 4: Old Yin

Focus brings success — inner attention to detail opens the way; patience becomes the key.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

Birth is difficult. Favorable for the great person — leadership is forged through trials; growth demands endurance.

  6. Line 6: Old Yin (top)

The difficulty fades. The path opens — after tension comes release; carry forward the lessons earned.

❤️ What does hexagram 3 mean for relationships and private life?

A connection is new or newly changing, and it feels unsettled. Misunderstandings are likely, not because something is wrong but because neither of you knows the ground yet. Avoid big declarations and big ultimatums. Talk things through, sort out one tangle at a time, and lean on friends who know you well. What survives this awkward start often becomes unusually solid.

💼 What does hexagram 3 mean for work and money?

New ventures rarely start tidy: a new job, a startup, a project with more loose ends than structure. Resist the urge to charge ahead. Bring in people who can carry part of the load, define who does what, and build simple systems before scaling. Progress is real but slow. Treat the friction as a sign of growth rather than failure.

🌌 What does hexagram 3 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Inner beginnings are messy. A new practice, a new belief or a fresh start after loss can leave you feeling scattered and unsure. Do not try to resolve everything at once. Like sorting tangled threads, pick one strand and follow it through. Ask for guidance where you need it. Patience now lays the foundation for a much deeper development later.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 23, Splitting Apart. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 23 – Splitting Apart

Splitting Apart indicates that, in the state which it symbolizes, it will not be advantageous to make a movement in any direction whatever.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Kan – Water
The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
Lower, inner: Zhen – Thunder
The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
