Hexagram 34: The Power of the Great
䷡ 大壯 Dà Zhuàng – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
The Power of the Great indicates that, under the conditions which it symbolizes, it will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
The Image
Thunder above heaven: the image of the Power of the Great. Thus the superior man does not take a step which is not according to propriety.
Description
The Power of the Great (Da Zhuang) shows thunder high in heaven: strength at its peak, pressing forward. Great power brings a great temptation to use it carelessly. The figure asks you to align strength with what is right and to take no step that goes against propriety.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 34 mean for relationships and private life?
Your influence in a relationship is strong now, which makes restraint all the more important. Don't push your will through just because you can. Power used gently creates trust; power used bluntly creates resentment that surfaces later. Ask yourself whether your demands are fair. Strength shows best in patience, protection and keeping your word, especially when the other person is going through a weaker phase.
💼 What does hexagram 34 mean for work and money?
Authority is on your side. Projects advance, arguments land, doors open. That is precisely when overreach becomes a danger: aggressive deals, rash hires, battles you don't need. Use your strength for what is right and sustainable. Follow rules and good practice even when you could bend them. Power exercised with integrity grows; power abused attracts opposition quickly.
🌌 What does hexagram 34 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Inner strength is surging: clarity, energy, confidence. Channel it rather than spending it on proving yourself. Great power in the spiritual sense means self-mastery, the ability to stop as well as to advance. Measure every step against what is right. When force and propriety go together, strength becomes trustworthy, to others and to you. Ram a wall and the horns get stuck; walk through the gate instead.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 43, Breakthrough (Resoluteness). It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 43 – Breakthrough (Resoluteness)
Breakthrough requires the exhibition of the culprit's guilt in the royal court, and a sincere and earnest appeal for sympathy and support, with a consciousness of the peril involved. He should also make announcement in his own city, and show that it will not be well to have recourse at once to arms. In this way there will be advantage in whatever he shall go forward to.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Zhen – Thunder
- The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
- Lower, inner: Qian – Heaven
- The Creative (Father). Within, it shows itself as will, resolve and the drive to act; without, as an ordering force that gives direction and structure.
