Hexagram 33: Retreat

䷠ 遯 Dùn – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Retreat indicates that in its circumstances there should be free course through retiring. To a small extent it will still be advantageous to be firm and correct.

The Image

The sky above a mountain: the image of Retreat. Thus the superior man keeps small men at a distance, not by showing that he hates them, but by his own dignified gravity.

Description

Retreat (Dun) shows the mountain rising beneath heaven while heaven withdraws: the dark is advancing, and strength must step back in good order. Retreat here is not flight but a deliberate, dignified withdrawal that preserves your power for later. Timing is everything; leave before you are forced out.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yin (bottom)

Retreat begins. Favorable — stepping back preserves strength; not every battle must be fought.

  2. Line 2: Old Yin

Retreat with dignity. Favorable — withdrawal is not defeat; it is wisdom in motion.

  3. Line 3: Old Yang

Retreat with fear. Danger — fleeing without clarity breeds chaos; pause and reflect.

  4. Line 4: Old Yang

Retreat with strategy. Favorable — timing is everything; know when to move.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

Retreat with arrogance. Danger — pride in withdrawal is still pride; soften your stance.

  6. Line 6: Old Yang (top)

Retreat complete. Favorable — the storm passes; return with insight.

❤️ What does hexagram 33 mean for relationships and private life?

Distance is healthy right now. A conflict that keeps escalating, a person who drains you, a pattern you cannot change by arguing: step back calmly, without slamming doors. Dignified reserve protects you better than angry confrontation. This need not be final. Withdrawal gives both sides room to cool down, and it shows clearly where the real boundaries lie.

💼 What does hexagram 33 mean for work and money?

Know when to pull out. A losing project, a toxic workplace or a hostile negotiation may be beyond saving for now. Withdraw in good order: secure your assets, document your work, leave relationships intact where you can. Don't retaliate against difficult people; keep them at arm's length through professionalism. A timely exit preserves strength for a better opportunity.

🌌 What does hexagram 33 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Retreat into stillness. When the world grows noisy and petty, withdraw your energy from battles that don't matter. A retreat in the literal sense, days of silence or time in nature, can be especially fruitful. Stepping back is not weakness; it is the art of keeping your center intact while the tide is against you. Strength rests, then returns.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 44, Coming to Meet. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 44 – Coming to Meet

Coming to Meet shows a female who is bold and strong. It will not be good to marry such a female.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Qian – Heaven
The Creative (Father). Within, it shows itself as will, resolve and the drive to act; without, as an ordering force that gives direction and structure.
Lower, inner: Gen – Mountain
Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
