Hexagram 20: Contemplation (View)
䷓ 觀 Guān – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Contemplation shows how one should be like the worshipper who has washed his hands but not yet presented his offerings; with sincerity and an appearance of dignity, commanding reverent regard.
The Image
Wind moving above the earth: the image of Contemplation. Thus the ancient kings examined the different regions of the kingdom, to see the ways of the people, and set forth their instructions.
Description
Contemplation (Guan) has two sides: looking deeply, and being looked at. Like a tower that sees across the land and is seen from everywhere, the person in this position influences others through example rather than command. It asks for sincere, collected attention, like a worshipper in the moment before the offering.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

Reading by area of life
❤️ What does hexagram 20 mean for relationships and private life?
Step back and look. Before reacting, observe how your partner, family or friends actually live, what they need and how you appear to them. You are being watched as well: your example teaches more than your advice. Quiet attention, a long walk together, a careful conversation without an agenda can reveal what a heated discussion would hide.
💼 What does hexagram 20 mean for work and money?
Survey the field before acting. Study the market, your organization and your own position from a distance. If you lead, remember that people read your conduct closely; integrity on display builds more authority than any memo. A good time for audits, reviews and strategy work. Decisions will be better once you have seen the whole landscape clearly.
🌌 What does hexagram 20 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Pure attention is the whole practice here. Sit, watch the mind, observe nature, read slowly. The moment before an offering, when the hands are washed and the heart is gathered, is the spirit of this time. Seeing clearly is already a transformation. And because others notice who you are becoming, sincerity in private shows up as quiet influence in public.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 23, Splitting Apart. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 23 – Splitting Apart
Splitting Apart indicates that, in the state which it symbolizes, it will not be advantageous to make a movement in any direction whatever.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Xun – Wind
- The Gentle (Eldest Daughter). Within, it works as quiet penetration that loosens inner blockages; without, as a connecting force that brings people and events together in the current of fate.
- Lower, inner: Kun – Earth
- The Receptive (Mother). Within, it appears as devotion, patience and support; without, as a nourishing space where forms and ideas take shape.
