Hexagram 1: The Creative

䷀ 乾 Qián – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

The Creative is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.

The Image

Heaven moves with strength: the image of the Creative. Thus the superior man nerves himself to ceaseless activity.

Description

The Creative (Qian) is pure yang: six unbroken lines, the strength of heaven that never stops moving. It stands for initiative, leadership and the energy that starts things and keeps them going. The attitude it asks for is steady, principled effort rather than a single burst of force.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

The dragon is hidden. Do not act — energy rests in shadow, like a seed beneath the earth; allow potential to ripen before revealing.

  2. Line 2: Old Yang

The dragon appears in the field. Favorable to see the great person — strength begins to awaken and seek direction; a moment of meeting the inner guide as maturity forms.

  3. Line 3: Old Yang

The dragon acts prematurely. Danger — impulse without grounding leads to collapse; pause and reassess.

  4. Line 4: Old Yang

The dragon takes flight. Do not doubt — power is ready to rise, and hesitation only hinders; this is initiation, where spirit aligns with intent.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

The flying dragon in the sky. Favorable to see the great person — strength has matured and moves in harmony with higher order; leadership is embodied.

  6. Line 6: Old Yang (top)

The arrogant dragon will regret — identifying with power without humility leads to downfall; true strength lies in service, not dominance.

❤️ What does hexagram 1 mean for relationships and private life?

Strong energy is flowing into your private life, and it wants direction. Take the initiative: name what you want, make the plans, keep your promises. The risk is that drive turns into dominance, so pair your strength with respect for the other person's pace and choices. A relationship built now on reliability and honest intent can carry real weight for years.

💼 What does hexagram 1 mean for work and money?

A good moment to launch, lead and take responsibility. Projects started under the Creative succeed through discipline more than inspiration: set clear stages, hold high standards and see each phase through to a finished result. Make the bold decision if it is yours to make, then back it with consistent work. Lasting success comes from daily effort, not from a single heroic push.

🌌 What does hexagram 1 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Heaven never pauses, and neither does the inner work this figure describes. Spiritual growth here means daily practice: strengthening the will, checking your motives, keeping your life in order so that energy is not wasted. Aim at something higher than personal gain. When effort is steady and intentions are clean, creative power stops being restless ambition and becomes a path.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
