Hexagram 59: Dispersion (Dissolution)
䷺ 渙 Huàn – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Dispersion intimates that under its conditions there will be progress and success. The king goes to his ancestral temple, and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
The Image
Wind moving above the water: the image of Dispersion. Thus the ancient kings presented offerings to God and established the ancestral temple.
Description
Dispersion (Huan) shows wind moving over water, breaking up ice and scattering what has hardened. Rigid egos and divisive interests dissolve, making room for reunion. The figure points to shared worship, a common cause and great undertakings as ways to bring scattered people back together.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

Reading by area of life
❤️ What does hexagram 59 mean for relationships and private life?
Hardened positions can soften now. Old grudges, pride or emotional walls are ready to dissolve. Take the first step: an apology, an invitation, a gesture of goodwill. Find something larger than your disagreements, such as shared values, family or a common project, to bring you together again. Scattered families especially benefit from a reason to meet. Warmth melts what argument cannot.
💼 What does hexagram 59 mean for work and money?
Divisions within a team or organization need to be dissolved. Break down silos, end turf wars, unite people around a meaningful goal, and start with honest conversations across departments. A shared mission works better than more rules. Big projects that require everyone's contribution are favored now. Leaders who put the common good above personal ego can reunite scattered forces.
🌌 What does hexagram 59 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Let rigidity melt. Ego, resentment and fixed ideas block the flow of spirit the way ice blocks a river. Devotion, ritual and service dissolve them gently. Connect with something greater than yourself, whether through prayer, meditation or community. As the hard edges soften, you will find yourself closer to others and to the source. Spring comes from within as well.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 27, Nourishment. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 27 – Nourishment
Nourishment indicates that with firm correctness there will be good fortune. We must look at what we are seeking to nourish, and by the exercise of our thoughts seek for the proper aliment.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Xun – Wind
- The Gentle (Eldest Daughter). Within, it works as quiet penetration that loosens inner blockages; without, as a connecting force that brings people and events together in the current of fate.
- Lower, inner: Kan – Water
- The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
