Hexagram 38: Opposition
䷥ 睽 Kuí – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Opposition indicates that, notwithstanding the condition of things which it denotes, in small matters there will still be good success.
The Image
Fire above and the waters of a marsh below: the image of Opposition. Thus the superior man, where there is a general agreement, yet admits diversity.
Description
Opposition (Kui) shows fire flaming upward and the lake seeping downward: two natures moving apart. Estrangement and misunderstanding prevail, and big undertakings will not succeed, though small things still can. The figure asks you to accept differences, find common ground in details, and keep your individuality within a larger unity.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 38 mean for relationships and private life?
You see things differently, perhaps very differently. Forcing agreement will only widen the gap. Accept that you are two people with separate perspectives, and look for small points of contact: a shared joke, a practical task, one topic you agree on. Misunderstandings are likely, so check what was meant before reacting. Respecting differences can bring a surprising closeness.
💼 What does hexagram 38 mean for work and money?
Joint work is difficult: opposing interests, clashing styles, factions. Large shared projects will stall. Concentrate on small, achievable agreements and practical tasks. Diversity of opinion in a team is not a disaster; used well, it sharpens decisions. Keep your own position clear without escalating, and write down what was agreed, since memories will differ. A modest result reached together beats a grand plan nobody supports.
🌌 What does hexagram 38 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Polarities within are pulling apart: head and heart, duty and desire, faith and doubt. Don't try to eliminate one side. A mature identity can hold contradiction without breaking, and patience with paradox is itself a practice. Remain yourself among people who think differently; unity at a deeper level allows variety on the surface. Small gestures of understanding, toward others and toward yourself, slowly bridge the gap.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 63, After Completion. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 63 – After Completion
After Completion intimates progress and success in small matters. There will be advantage in being firm and correct. There has been good fortune in the beginning; there may be disorder in the end.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Li – Fire
- The Clinging (Middle Daughter). Within, it is clarity, inner vision and passion; without, a light that guides and connects through beauty and meaning.
- Lower, inner: Dui – Lake
- The Joyous (Youngest Daughter). Within, it shows as joy, self-reflection and openness; without, as inspiration that finds expression through conversation and creativity.
