Hexagram 25: Innocence (The Unexpected)

䷘ 無妄 Wú Wàng – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Innocence indicates great progress and success, while there will be advantage in being firm and correct. If its subject and his action are not correct, he will fall into errors, and it will not be advantageous for him to move in any direction.

The Image

Thunder rolling all under the sky, giving to everything its nature free from insincerity: the image of Innocence. Thus the ancient kings made their regulations in complete accordance with the seasons, thereby nourishing all things.

Description

Innocence (Wu Wang) is action free of calculation, in harmony with the way things naturally move. Thunder rolls under heaven and everything receives its true nature. Sincerity brings success; scheming, even with good intentions, brings misfortune. Expect the unexpected and respond without ulterior motives.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

Reading by area of life

❤️ What does hexagram 25 mean for relationships and private life?

Honesty without hidden agendas is what works now. Love that calculates its advantages loses its charm; love given freely finds its way. Be spontaneous, kind and direct. Surprises may come, pleasant or not, and the best response is a natural one. Don't manipulate outcomes or read too much into signs. Simply be sincere and see what grows.

💼 What does hexagram 25 mean for work and money?

Do good work for its own sake. Schemes, shortcuts and office politics will backfire unexpectedly. Focus on the task, act on sound principles, and accept that some results lie beyond your control. Unforeseen events, positive or negative, are likely; a clean conscience and flexible plans make them easier to handle. Integrity is the best protection right now.

🌌 What does hexagram 25 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Return to the simple, uncalculating heart. Practice without bargaining for results, and pray without trying to strike deals. When intention and action are clean, life moves through you more freely. The unexpected becomes a teacher rather than a threat. Watch for subtle self-interest masquerading as virtue; innocence here means alignment with what is real, not naivety.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 53, Development (Gradual Progress). It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 53 – Development (Gradual Progress)

Development suggests to us the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune attending it. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Qian – Heaven
The Creative (Father). Within, it shows itself as will, resolve and the drive to act; without, as an ordering force that gives direction and structure.
Lower, inner: Zhen – Thunder
The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
