Hexagram 17: Following
䷐ 隨 Suí – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Following indicates that there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct; there will then be no error.
The Image
Thunder hidden in the midst of the marsh: the image of Following. Thus the superior man, when it is getting toward dark, enters his house and rests.
Description
Following (Sui) shows thunder resting inside the lake: strength that adapts and lets itself be led. To gain followers, one must first know how to follow, yielding to the demands of the time without giving up one's principles. Rest and adaptation, not stubbornness, are the keys.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 17 mean for relationships and private life?
Flexibility serves your relationships now. Let the other person lead sometimes, adapt to changing circumstances, and notice when stubbornness is only pride in disguise. Following does not mean giving in on everything: choose whom you follow and why. A partnership where both people can step forward and step back by turns becomes lighter, more playful and surprisingly stable.
💼 What does hexagram 17 mean for work and money?
Adapt to the situation instead of fighting it. A new boss, a market shift or a changed team structure asks you to follow well before you can lead again. Observe, learn the new rules, and support good direction where you see it. Influence grows from trust earned through cooperation. Respect rest as well: work that runs late every night undermines judgment.
🌌 What does hexagram 17 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Evening has its own wisdom. Thunder sleeps in the lake through the winter, and the wise go indoors when it grows dark. Follow the natural rhythm of activity and rest, effort and surrender. Spiritual following means letting something larger than your plans guide you, while staying awake to whether the guide deserves it. Trust what is sound; drop what merely flatters.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 53, Development (Gradual Progress). It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 53 – Development (Gradual Progress)
Development suggests to us the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune attending it. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Dui – Lake
- The Joyous (Youngest Daughter). Within, it shows as joy, self-reflection and openness; without, as inspiration that finds expression through conversation and creativity.
- Lower, inner: Zhen – Thunder
- The Arousing (Eldest Son). Within, it is the impulse to change, to wake up and break free; without, a sudden jolt that shatters rigidity and sets things moving.
