Hexagram 15: Modesty
䷎ 謙 Qiān – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
Modesty indicates progress and success. The superior man, being humble, will have a good issue to his undertakings.
The Image
A mountain in the midst of the earth: the image of Modesty. Thus the superior man diminishes what is excessive in himself and increases where there is any defect, bringing about an equality in his treatment of himself and others.
Description
Modesty (Qian) places a mountain beneath the earth: real substance that does not put itself on display. The figure praises balance, giving where there is too little and taking from where there is too much. It asks for quiet competence and a fair, even-handed spirit.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 15 mean for relationships and private life?
Unassuming kindness wins hearts now. Listen more than you speak, credit your partner's efforts, and avoid scoring points in arguments. Modesty is not self-neglect: say what you need, but without drama. Where the balance of giving and taking has slipped, correct it gently. People feel safe with someone who doesn't need to dominate, and trust grows naturally.
💼 What does hexagram 15 mean for work and money?
Let results speak. Bragging and self-promotion will backfire, while consistent, competent work earns lasting respect. Share credit with your team and accept tasks others overlook. Fairness in pay, workload and recognition matters right now; correct imbalances where you can. A modest approach also helps with money: spend reasonably, avoid showing off, and keep reserves for leaner times.
🌌 What does hexagram 15 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
True humility is accurate self-knowledge, neither inflated nor diminished. Notice where you exaggerate your merits and where you belittle them, and bring both back toward the middle. Practice in the background, without needing to be seen. The mountain hidden in the earth is still a mountain. Inner greatness that has no need to display itself carries remarkable strength.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 40, Deliverance. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 40 – Deliverance
In Deliverance advantage will be found in the southwest. If no further operations are called for, there will be good fortune in coming back to the old conditions. If some operations are called for, there will be good fortune in the early conducting of them.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Kun – Earth
- The Receptive (Mother). Within, it appears as devotion, patience and support; without, as a nourishing space where forms and ideas take shape.
- Lower, inner: Gen – Mountain
- Keeping Still (Youngest Son). Within, it means gathering, boundaries and stillness; without, stability, reflection and the completion of a cycle.
