Hexagram 10: Treading (Conduct)

䷉ 履 Lǚ – The Book of Changes

The Judgment

Treading suggests the idea of one treading on the tail of a tiger, which does not bite him. There will be progress and success.

The Image

The sky above and a marsh below: the image of Treading. Thus the superior man discriminates between high and low, and gives settlement to the aims of the people.

Description

Treading (Lu) shows the weak stepping on the tail of the strong without being bitten. Conduct is everything: courtesy, tact and a clear sense of one's place can carry you safely through a risky situation. It asks for good manners backed by inner firmness.

The six lines

A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

  1. Line 1: Old Yang (bottom)

Treading on the tiger’s tail. No harm — courage tempered by awareness avoids danger; walk with grace.

  2. Line 2: Old Yang

Treading with humility. Favorable — respect opens doors; strength bows before wisdom.

  3. Line 3: Old Yin

Treading with arrogance. Danger — pride blinds the path; fall follows hubris.

Treading in rhythm. Favorable — harmony with the moment brings success; attune to the pulse of life.

  5. Line 5: Old Yang

Treading with clarity. Favorable — the path is visible; move with confidence.

  6. Line 6: Old Yang (top)

Treading in darkness. Danger — without vision, each step risks collapse; pause and seek light.

Reading by area of life

❤️ What does hexagram 10 mean for relationships and private life?

Delicate ground. Someone in your life is powerful, sensitive or easily provoked, and your approach determines the outcome. Be friendly, direct and respectful without groveling. Know your boundaries and state them calmly. Good manners are not weakness here; they are what keeps the tiger from biting. Steady, considerate behavior earns trust where cleverness would only create suspicion.

💼 What does hexagram 10 mean for work and money?

Dealing with superiors, important clients or authorities demands tact. Understand the hierarchy, respect it, and still act with integrity. Speak plainly but politely, keep promises, avoid arrogance. Risky situations can be handled successfully if you know your role and stay within it. Clear rules about who decides what will also ease tension within your own team.

🌌 What does hexagram 10 mean for your personal path and spirituality?

Conduct is a spiritual practice. How you walk through the world, how you treat those above and below you, reveals more than any belief you hold. Simplicity helps: act honestly, take one careful step at a time, and keep your ambitions in proportion. Knowing your place is not about rank; it is about being settled in who you are.

Nuclear hexagram

Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →

Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 37, The Family. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.

Hexagram 37 – The Family

For the realization of what is taught in the Family, what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct.

The two trigrams

Upper, outer: Qian – Heaven
The Creative (Father). Within, it shows itself as will, resolve and the drive to act; without, as an ordering force that gives direction and structure.
Lower, inner: Dui – Lake
The Joyous (Youngest Daughter). Within, it shows as joy, self-reflection and openness; without, as inspiration that finds expression through conversation and creativity.
