Hexagram 7: The Army
䷆ 師 Shī – The Book of Changes
The Judgment
The Army indicates how, in the case which it supposes, with firmness and correctness and a leader of age and experience, there will be good fortune and no error.
The Image
Water in the midst of the earth: the image of the Army. Thus the superior man nourishes and educates the people, and collects from among them the multitudes of his hosts.
Description
The Army (Shi) shows a large, organized force under firm leadership: water hidden in the earth, strength held in reserve among the people. Collective power succeeds only with discipline, a just cause and an experienced leader. It asks you to organize, take responsibility, and use force sparingly.
The six lines
A line's place shapes its role: 1 the beginning, 2 the center of the inner world, 3 the threshold to the outside, 4 close to power, 5 the ruler's place, 6 the end and the excess. Keep this grid in mind and the line texts become much easier to read. More in the guide →

❤️ What does hexagram 7 mean for relationships and private life?
Family and partnership need some structure right now. Who handles what? Where are the shared rules? Without clarity, small frictions grow into factions. Someone has to lead fairly, and it may be you. Lead by example rather than command, and keep the household's goals in view. A well-organized home frees everyone to be warmer with each other.
💼 What does hexagram 7 mean for work and money?
Organization is the key. A team, department or campaign succeeds only with clear roles, discipline and a leader people trust. If you lead, be firm and fair and explain the purpose behind your orders. If you follow, give your full effort to the shared goal. Invest in training your people; strength that is carefully built is far more reliable than strength merely assembled.
🌌 What does hexagram 7 mean for your personal path and spirituality?
Your inner forces need a commander. Scattered impulses, habits and desires behave like an undisciplined army: loud, wasteful, easily turned against you. Bring them into order through regular practice and a clear purpose. Discipline here is not harshness; it is care, the way a good general looks after his troops. Then strength is available when it is truly needed.
Nuclear hexagram
Lines 2, 3 and 4 form the lower trigram, lines 3, 4 and 5 the upper one. Leaving out the beginning and the end reveals the core of the situation, what is at work out of sight. It is a secondary aspect, not a second verdict. If it seems to contradict the main hexagram, that happens and is not an error. More in the guide →
Lines 2, 3, 4 and 3, 4, 5 form nuclear hexagram 24, Return. It shows what is at work beneath the surface – an inner tendency, not a verdict on the situation itself.
Hexagram 24 – Return
Return indicates that there will be free course and progress. The subject of it finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed. He will return and repeat his proper course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.
The two trigrams
- Upper, outer: Kun – Earth
- The Receptive (Mother). Within, it appears as devotion, patience and support; without, as a nourishing space where forms and ideas take shape.
- Lower, inner: Kan – Water
- The Abysmal (Middle Son). Within, it stands for trial, depth and commitment; without, for a passage through the dark that brings hidden resources to light.
